The Department of History at Sullamussalam Science College has a rich history of academic growth and development. It began its journey in 1995 as a subsidiary subject of BA English. In 2013, the department expanded its scope by providing complementary courses to BA Economics students as well. The department achieved a significant milestone in the year 2021 when it became a full-fledged department, offering a Double Major Programme in Communication and Media & History.
The department's legacy began with our Founder Principal Dr. PP Abdul Haque, who was its first faculty member. In 1999, Dr. Musthafa Farook joined the team, contributing to its growth and academic development. Today, the department has three full-time faculty members, dedicated to providing quality education and fostering a deep understanding of historical contexts and narratives.
The Departments of History and Journalism organized a ten day study tour to New Delhi and Agra for the final-year BA Communication and Media - History students. The study tour, held from 9th to 19th December 2024, aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to the historical and cultural landmarks of India.
A group of 25 students, accompanied by three faculty members, visited iconic sites such as Agra Fort, the majestic Taj Mahal, Humayun's Tomb, India Gate, Jama Masjid, and the towering Qutub Minar. The tour offered a unique opportunity to explore the rich architectural and historical heritage of the Mughal and colonial eras, complementing their academic studies.
Sullamusalam Science College, Areekode, organised the Eranad-Ponnani Heritage Tour during November 1, 2024. The heritage walk, organised in search of the history and heritage of the anti-British struggles of Eranad and Valluvanad, was a novel experience to the participants.
College Manager Prof. N. V. Abdurahiman, flagged off the event which was organised by the departments of History and Journalism as part of the 80th anniversary of Sullamusalam Institutions and the 30th anniversary of Sullamusalam Science College.
The heritage walk, headed by Shebeen Mehboob, journalist and researcher, was attended by around 50 people from different parts of the district.
During the programme, the participants visited the various locations such as the tomb of Ensign
Wyse at Manjeri Boys School premises, the The British Police Outpost at Mudikode, the tombs of Pookottur war martyrs, Malappuram Mosques, Lancaster's tomb, various ancient churches in Ponnani, Azheekkal village and Layam Music club.
The Department of History and Journalism at Sullamussalam Science College organized the Fourth Edition of the Heritage Walk on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
This year's walk covered the culturally rich and historically significant locations of Calicut, Kappad, and Iringal, providing participants with an immersive experience of Kerala's heritage. The event aimed to foster a deeper appreciation for local history and cultural preservation among students and history enthusiasts.
The Heritage Walk continues to be a flagship initiative of the department, inspiring meaningful engagement with the region's historical and cultural legacy.
