The department started offering a B.Sc course in 1999 with 40 students. The postgraduate course began in 2004 with 12 seats. The faculty includes four permanent teachers and three guest lecturers. The department almost always achieves a 100% pass rate.

Students often win first prizes in the National Level Essay Presentation Contest organized by BARC, Mumbai. A Material Sciences lab has been set up to encourage student research in this area. The department regularly organizes seminars and conferences and holds an Open House Programme during the annual Science Day Celebrations.

Out of the seven faculty members, three hold Ph.D. degrees, and the others are pursuing research. Dr. Sharafali has received a patent and filed another in 2024. To promote translational research, the department has established a mini FabLab in collaboration with RISE-TBI.
