A Skill Enhancement Workshop on Literature and Language: Induction Programme

The Department of English, Sullamussalam Science College, successfully organized a three-day induction programme for the first-year undergraduate students from July 17 to July 19, 2024. This initiative aimed to familiarize the students with the academic environment, enhance their understanding of the curriculum, and ignite their enthusiasm for learning.

Day 1: 17th July 2024 (Wednesday)

The programme commenced with an Ice-Breaking Session, led by Ms. Sumayya P., Assistant Professor, Department of English. This interactive session provided students with an opportunity to introduce themselves and foster connections with their peers.
In the afternoon session, Mr. Jouhar K., Assistant Professor, provided an insightful overview of the FYUGP (Four-Year Undergraduate Programme). He elaborated on the curriculum structure, academic opportunities, and future prospects.

Day 2: 18th July 2024 (Thursday)

The second day began with a captivating session titled "From Sonnet to Startups: The Surprising Journey of Language and Literature Graduates," delivered by Dr. Yoonus P., Assistant Professor. The session highlighted the diverse career pathways available to English graduates, from traditional academia to modern entrepreneurial ventures.
This was followed by a practical session on Introducing Grammar, conducted by Mr. Noushad Ali K., Assistant Professor, to strengthen students' foundational language skills.
Later, Dr. Muhammed Jamsheer TP, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, introduced the students to Economics Minors and Multi-Disciplinary Courses, emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to education.
The post-lunch session featured Ms. Nasnin KP, Assistant Professor, who led Reading the Rhythms, a session designed to enhance students' appreciation of poetry and rhythm. The day concluded with a Short Film Screening and Analysis session, facilitated by Ms. Sumayya P., which combined critical thinking and creative expression.

Day 3: 19th July 2024 (Friday)

The final day began with Mr. Asfar Sadath, Assistant Professor, introducing students to the fascinating world of English language and literature through his session titled "Unlocking the World of Words."
The second session was conducted by Mr. Raoof KP, Assistant Professor, Department of History, who provided an overview of History Minors and Multi-Disciplinary Courses, inspiring students to explore historical perspectives.
In the afternoon, Mr. Ayyoob MP, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, delivered an intriguing talk titled "OV Vijayan's Legend of Khasak and Today's Price of a Kilo of Herring in a Literary Scholar's View," blending literature and contemporary societal reflections.
The programme concluded with a session on Arabic Translation and Career Opportunities, led by Dr. Jabir Amani, Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic, which opened avenues for students interested in translation studies and language careers.
